Nutrition Expert and Program Leader
Luis Rodriguez combines his applied and scientific background in nutrition, metabolic dysfunction and obesity prevention in his role as Nutrition Expert and Program Leader of ConnectWell’s Eating for a Vibrant Life℠ Program and Seminar Series.
Luis Rodriguez is a clinical dietitian at University of California, San Francisco Medical Center and a nutritionist at the WATCH (Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health) clinic. As a nutritionist at the WATCH clinic, along with Dr. Robert Lustig, Luis Rodriguez provides nutrition counseling to overweight children, teenagers, and their families. He also conducts the clinic's teaching breakfast program where he provides hands-on educational sessions on optimizing nutrition. Luis is the pediatric newsletter section editor of Weight Management Matters, a publication of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Luis Rodriguez has a very strong interest in the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity-related complications in children, such as type 2 diabetes. As an undergraduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, he conducted research under Sharon Fleming, PhD in an overweight children population to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. He also worked in a number of research projects under Patricia Crawford, DrPH, RD at the University of California, Berkeley—Atkins Center for Weight and Health to improve the eating habits of children and their families. With Dr. Crawford, Luis was involved in several community interventions around improving the health environment of children. Luis hosted a television show in Spanish focusing on healthy cooking for children. He also designed a tool kit for food service staff for elementary and middle schools in Tulare and Kern counties to improve the nutritional content of the meals. Additionally, Luis worked on a project to change foods available to children in corner stores during school hours in South and West Berkeley to improve the nutritional quality of the food options available to children while minimizing the unhealthy options.
Luis is a native of Jalisco, Mexico, a beautiful region in central-western Mexico known for its high elevation, its fine tequila production and mariachi music. Luis is an avid runner and is intermittently training for marathons. Additionally, Luis has a passion for music and enjoys playing (with limited skills) the guitar
Luis Rodriguez earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutritional Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, and completed his dietetic internship program at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. He is a registered dietitian, has a certification for nutrition support clinician, and is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Luis earned a Masters in Public Health at University of California, Berkeley and was his class commencement speaker. Luis is currently a doctorate candidate at the University of California, San Francisco.
